Berzins Nature Park & Trail, Environmental Services, Ocean View, DE

Provided comprehensive environmental planning, permitting, and design services for the Berzins Nature Park & Trail, a new recreational nature trail and wetland boardwalk developed under DelDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) that creates opportunities for environmental education. Services included completion of a wetland delineation and coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to obtain a preliminary jurisdictional determination, along with preparation and approval of a Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) Subaqueous Lands Permit for soil borings and a Time‑of‑Year Restriction waiver. Ensured stormwater and erosion and sediment control compliance by coordinating with the Sussex County Conservation District (SCD) to secure the necessary approvals for land-disturbing activities.

Environmental services also encompassed NEPA documentation, development of avoidance and minimization strategies, and preparation of environmental compliance plans.  WM provided landscape and planting design, and coordinated closely with DelDOT Environmental Studies throughout design and supported public workshops and agency coordination efforts.  Tree surveys, invasive species assessments and pre-construction treatments, and support for a Phase I Archaeological Survey were also completed to ensure responsible stewardship of sensitive non-tidal and tidal wetlands and marsh resources as the project advanced through design and construction.
