Building upon the work already completed in the Isle of Wight County’s Comprehensive Plan, created the Isle of Wight County’s Safe Streets for All Action Plan, following the federal highway process for (1) systematically evaluating safety crash data; (2) creating a high injury network using GIS; (3) performing equitable outreach to residents and local business owners; (4) reviewing vehicle speed data to proactively identify high risk safety concerns; (5) comparing three important perspectives on high-risk safety locations: crash data, speeding locations, and public input; (6) creating safety countermeasures for the high risk location; (7) prioritizing the improvements based on the ability to eliminate severe injuries and fatalities; (8) assessing the data-driven ranking geographically to ensure underserved communities receive special attention; (9) creating an Action Plan for funding and implementing the improvements. This Action Plan and resulting implementation program will be flexible enough to evolve as improvements are implemented and the County’s population continues to grow.
