The US 250 / Route 151 Roundabout project showcases an innovative approach to traffic management in a highly constrained rural setting. To reduce construction duration and limit phasing impacts, the team conducted a data-driven analysis of traffic volumes, crash history, truck restrictions, pavement conditions, and travel times to identify viable detour strategies. The project included full design of maintenance of traffic, signing, pavement markings, and lighting. To further enhance safety, a runaway truck ramp was added downstream of a steep grade, with all associated signing, marking, and lighting seamlessly integrated into the project.
For the I-64/US 250 (Exit 124) Interchange DDI element, modified the existing conventional diamond interchange into a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), with a strong emphasis on traffic control operations and design implementation. The team developed a detailed Maintenance of Traffic plan centered on a carefully sequenced switch-over process to transition traffic safely and seamlessly into the DDI’s counterflow pattern. A step-by-step switch-over narrative guided staging, temporary traffic control, signal integration, signing, pavement markings and lighting, minimizing confusion and maintaining operations throughout construction. On-site traffic engineering support was provided during the nighttime phasing to assist with field layout, real-time coordination, and final traffic shifts.
